Jacky

Please refer to the response from the EA in respect of the noise bund.

Could you call me when you are free

Cheers

Dave

David,

The noise fence/bund is not linked to Environment Agency conditions. In principle we support its removal from the scheme as it will increase the river corridor width.

Many thanks

Adam

Adam,

Many thanks for your note.

The project engineer is happy to remove the ‘hard’ structures from the stream base and sloping banks, with the pre-planted coir rolls being retained in the scheme to offer some scour protection on the outside bends of the meanders whilst the vegetation matures.

We will also add to the scheme the issue relating to the streams base substrate, if no gravels / flints are encountered when the new stream is excavated we’ll look to import the gravel material as advised by you. Similarly we’ll replace the riprap gabions with large cobbles / boulders instead.

As per your advice we have looked to avoid ‘pinch points’ by maintaining a broad landscaped corridor for the stream to meander through. We have also got to a position where we no longer require a noise attenuation bund / fence along the eastern side of the stream corridor, this has freed up significant space for a generous stream width (i.e. the “land take” previously caused by the bund would have pinched the space down in which the stream can sit within). The Planning Authorities are looking for your confirmation that the EA are happy to see the noise fence / bund removed from the scheme – could you drop me a note to support this if you’re happy to do so?
Regards,

David

David,

Following our discussion on Friday and to allow you to make amendments to the design. Please find below my comments on the proposed river corridor scheme. In general I support the scheme but request the following amendments.

Removal of hard engineering elements from the channel design, i.e. use of riprap and gabions. These techniques should be avoided and only considered were fully justified. A bio engineering solution would be more suitable in the short term, if there is a concern regarding potential erosion or scour of the newly created channel.

The high level principle, which was discussed during the initial site visit, was to avoid pinch points and encroachment from the development into the stream corridor. This will avoid the need for hard engineering, allowing the stream to be dynamic and under go natural processes. This design principle will mean the channel will have a greater biodiversity potential and is in keeping with Water Framework Directive principles.

No details of the channel bed treatment have been supplied. It is recommended that a two stage approach is taken. The first phase would be, to see if suitable bed material is present in the newly excavation channel corridor. The type of bed material which is characteristic of this part of the Wallington catchment is flint and cobbles, which tend to be of varying size.

If suitable bed material is absent, material should be imported to the scheme. Material should be of local character and reference material should be taken from the adjoining head water streams. It is recommended that the areas that prescribe riprap on the bed as part of the current design are replaced with large cobbles/flint, to be dress with smaller material. Imported material should be irregular in shape, rounded material should be avoided, and generally this makes marine aggregates unsuitable. The suitability of the material, namely the size and shape will have a direct relationship to the invertebrate and fish communities which the channel will be able to support in the future.

For Environment Agency schemes my team has sourced material from New Milton Sand & Ballast http://www.nmsb.co.uk/ other local companies will supply a similar grade material.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Regards

Adam
